A Hyde Park woman allegedly stabbed her boyfriend to death during an argument earlier this week.

Shawanda Swain was ordered held in lieu of $500,000 bail on Saturday in the death of Damani Chenier.

Prosecutors said the couple was fighting inside Swain’s apartment in the 5100 block of South Hyde Park Boulevard when Swain, 21, took out a kitchen knife and stabbed him once.

A neighbor called 911 and Chenier, 23, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he died.

Swain was taken into custody after the attack and was charged Friday with first-degree murder, police said

Swain’s attorney argued she was being physically and verbally abused by her boyfriend and she acted in self-defense.

Swain, who is a home health care worker, has no criminal background.
