White Sox 4, Reds 3

Hit and miss

Starter Felipe Paulino’s second outing was better with five strikeouts over three innings and a perfect final frame with Ks against Jay Bruce and Ryan Ludwick. But not before Bruce got him for a homer, one of three extra-base hits against him. “I feel great,’’ said Paulino, who hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2012 because of elbow and shoulder surgeries. “My arm is coming along great right now. I like how my recovery is coming.’’

Stay hot

Leadoff man Adam Eaton doubled, got hit by a Aroldis Chapman pitch on the back of his right shoulder and walked, extending his on-base streak to six straight times over the last two games. Eaton stole a base but was thrown out at third on the front end of an attempted double steal.

Seeing Reds

Adam Dunn had two RBI singles and lined out to right field in three at-bats against his former team.

Clean it up

The Reds’ Brayan Pena motored from first to third without getting his uniform dirty when Tyler Flowers’ throw on an attempted steal sailed over second base, which was not covered by either Alexei Ramirez or Gordon Beckham. Manager Robin Ventura called it an unacceptable “miscommunication” between the veteran infielders. “That can’t happen,’’ Ventura said. “So it was handled. Somebody has to be there.”

On deck

White Sox vs. Diamondbacks, Goodyear, 2:05, Jose Quintana vs. Brandon McCarthy. Closer candidate Nate Jones makes his first appearance.
