A new Gallup poll shows that while a majority of Americans still support President Barack Obama’s decision in 2011 to remove nearly all troops from Iraq, public support has fallen significantly from three years ago.

Obama’s action on Iraq has been heavily criticized by former officials in the Bush administration.

Currently, 61 percent of Americans say the troop withdrawal was the right thing to do, but that’s down from 75 percent in Oct. 2011.

Overall, opposition to entering Iraq in the first place is holding steady at 57 percent.

Across party lines, support for the troop withdrawal has fallen most among independent voters, while only a third of Republicans support Obama’s action.
