A water main broke in the West Town neighborhood Monday evening, shutting down the Grand station on the Chicago Transit Authority’s Blue Line.
The 8-inch water main broke in the 400 block of North Halsted Street, and crews are working to shut it down as of 8 p.m., city Water Department spokesman Tom LaPorte said.
The water main break has forced the closure of the nearby CTA Blue Line station, where water has entered the mezzanine area and the platform, spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski said citing preliminary information.
The CTA was notified of the situation about 7:35 p.m., she said. Trains are still running normally, but are not stopping at the Grand station in either direction, Hosinski said.
Customers have also been cleared from the station, she said. Riders should use the No. 56 bus as an alternative.
“We are working quickly to resolve it and get the station back into service,” Hosinski said.
Officials could not yet say when the leak might be fixed, or when the station might reopen.
