SPRINGFIELD-In its first test vote on same-sex marriage, the Illinois House mustered 59 votes Tuesday to approve changes to legislation that would permit gays and lesbians to wed.

While the vote allowed the amendment to Rep. Greg Harris (D-Chicago) to be adopted, it showed his legislation is presently one vote shy of the 60 it would take to pass the House.

The amendment would change the effective date to next June 1, lowering the threshold it needs to win House approval from 71 votes to 60 votes. It also provides greater safeguards to private clubs not to observe the law.

Stay tuned. Debate on the bill has started.
