Despite a solid second-half effort, Illinois lost at Clemson 50-49 on Sunday in its second-round NIT tournament.

Jon Ekey’s third clutch three-pointer gave Illinois its first lead, 49-48, with 2:05 left. The Illini, who end their season at 20-15, had been down 28-19 at halftime.

Clemson (22-12) will play Belmont on Tuesday for trip to the NIT Final Four in New York.

The Illini had trailed 17 at Boston University before pulling out a 66-62 win. Both games would have been played at Illinois, but the Illini were forced on the road because of a major renovation at the former Assembly Hall.
