Investigators suspect a salvage yard on the Far South Side was operating a chop shop with as many as 100 suspected stolen vehicles on his lot, a source said. One person was in custody early Tuesday, the source said.
Police learned of the operation, in the 3000 block of East 106th, after a family began scouring the neighborhood for a missing white truck on Monday, the source said.
The truck’s owner spotted the vehicle on the salvage yard property, and then called police, the source said.
Investigators then discovered dozens more suspected stolen vehicles, the source said, including a Jeep that had been stripped but still had a working engine, the source said.
The investigation is expected to take “some time” due, in part, to the “volume” of vehicles, a police spokesman said Tuesday.
