A toddler has been turned over to the state Department of Child and Family Services after being found alone and crying on the street Sunday morning in the West Side Austin neighborhood, officials said.

Someone saw the 3-year-old child crying in the 4900 block of West Adams Street about 5 a.m., police said. Officers found the child and took him to Loretto Hospital, where he was listed in “stable” condition early Sunday but did not have any injuries, police said.

The child was turned over to DCFS Sunday morning, police said. His parents have been located, but it doesn’t appear any arrests will be made, police said.

Police are still investigating why the child was alone.

This is the second time in recent days that a Chicago toddler has been found outside in the cold.

About 11:50 p.m. Thursday night, a toddler was found wandering around without shoes or a coat in single-digit weather on the Southeast Side. The boy, 2, was found at 82nd and Avalon and has been placed in a foster home as state welfare officials investigate the boy’s mother for alleged neglect.
