Rusin division

It was a tale of two innings for lefty Chris Rusin, who struck out Mike Trout and retired Albert Pujols on a pop-up in a 1-2-3 first inning. But he needed 37 pitches to get through the second, in which he allowed four runs, five hits and one walk.

Hot Bryant

In his first spring-training at-bat, third-base prospect Kris Bryant worked the count full against Angels prospect Jarrett Grube, fouled off two more pitches, then drove the next one over the center-field wall for a two-run homer. “It was a good first at-bat,” said Bryant, who figures he got the slider to hit only because he swung through a breaking pitch earlier in the count. “All the nerves are gone.”

Cold McDonald

Right-hander James McDonald, who’s returning from a shoulder injury, had an even worse debut than Rusin. McDonald walked three and gave up two home runs, including a grand slam to Trout, among the six runs he allowed. He retired three batters.

Rain check

With storms forecast in the Phoenix area and three games scheduled the next two days, manager Rick Renteria plans to use those hangar-like cages at the new spring facility to get pitchers their work. The cages have mounds.
