PHOENIX — The Cubs finalized their Opening Day roster Saturday by giving the last bullpen job to right-hander Brian Schlitter of Park Ridge.
‘‘It’s pretty amazing,’’ said Schlitter, who had been cut from big-league camp early in the week, then learned Friday he would be in Pittsburgh for the opener Monday. ‘‘I didn’t see it coming. I was hoping it was coming, but it was a nice surprise.’’
Out-of-options right-hander Alber-to Cabrera, who appeared to have the team made until back-to-back ugly outings in the middle of last week, was designated for assignment.
Schlitter, who missed the 2011 season to Tommy John surgery after making his big-league debut with the Cubs and pitching in seven games in 2010, throws in the upper-90s and pitched well all spring, including after being sent down.
‘‘He kept after it, to his credit,’’ manager Rick Renteria said. ‘‘I tip my hat to him because he epitomizes the stick-to-it-iveness to get after it, to never quit.’’
Here is how the Cubs’ Opening Day roster will look:
Starting rotation: Right-hander Jeff Samardzija, left-hander Travis Wood, right-hander Edwin Jackson, right-hander Jason Hammel, right-hander Carlos Villanueva.
