Eight people, including a child and three firefighters, were taken to hospitals Monday afternoon following a smoky fire in a University of Chicago-owned high-rise in the South Side Hyde Park neighborhood.

Fire crews responded to the 5800 block of South Dorchester Avenue about 4:15 p.m., and found transformers on fire in the basement of a 12-story building, a Fire Departmetn spokesman said.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke, and took five civilians from the building to hospitals, Fire Media Affairs Chief Larry Langford said.

All were suffering from smoke inhalation, and their conditions range from good to serious, Langford said. One of those injured is a child taken to University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, he said.

Three firefighters were also taken to hospitals for smoke- and stress-related injuries, but all are in good condition, Langford said.

The University of Chicago owns the 33-unit building, which houses some faculty and staff members, according to the university.

Crews had contained the fire as of about 5:15 p.m., though the transformer continues to smoke, Langford said.

ComEd crews have been dispatched to the building and about 260 customers are without power in the area, a utility spokesman said, though ComEd could not yet confirm the outages are related to the fire.
