A 93-year-old retired priest was rescued Saturday afternoon from the Monroe Harbor after his wheelchair rolled into the water during the Chicago Air and Water Show.
The priest, who’d been watching the show with his caregiver when the accident happened around 3:15 p.m., was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was in “pretty good” condition, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said.
They’d been watching the show near the Chicago Yacht Club, were distracted, and the wheelchair “got away” and went into the water, but passersby pulled the elderly man from the water even before firefighters arrived, according to Langford.
He said he didn’t have the priest’s name.
The accident happened near the pumping station at the Chicago Yacht Club.
The Air and Water Show concludes Sunday, running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
