Chicago Public Schools is investigating the circumstances preceding the suicide of a 12-year-old student at Peirce International Studies Elementary School who claimed she was bullied at school.
McKenzie Phlipot died on May 8 in her Andersonville home, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.
The Peirce student confronted “all the bullies at my school” on her Instagram account two months before her death. “Everybody bullies you ok so I shouldn’t be talking,” one user wrote back to her.
Four days before she died, she had posted about suicide.
CPS spokesman Joel Hood confirmed on Friday the investigation and also confirmed that the school, 1423 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., had held two sessions on Thursday, called “Stress Management & Suicide Prevention,” for parents. He would not comment further.
According to local news website DNAinfo.com, her parents passed out flyers this week that accused the school of ignoring their cries for help after they complained about bullying.
Neither parent could be reached Friday for comment.
