A 53-year-old Waukegan man has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder after his wife, daughter and dog were found dead in their townhome Sunday night.

According to Waukegan police, officers went to the home after Anthony Marcus called police to tell them he had just killed his family and was going to kill himself, .

An emergency dispatcher received the call about 6:15 p.m. from a townhome in the 4100 block of Continental Drive, said Waukegan police Cmdr. Joe Florip. When officers arrived, they found what is believed to be a suicide note on the front porch, Florip said.

Officers went inside and found Marcus, 53, who was immediately taken into custody and given medical attention for what are thought to be self-inflicted wounds, Florip said.

As police continued the search of the residence, they found a woman, 50, and girl, 17, both dead, Florip said. A dog was also found dead.

Florip said that police believe the three to be husband, wife and daughter.

Marcus is held on $5 million bond.

“This is just shocking,” said Kayla Walker, 23, who lives across the street. “Their daughter was in a wheelchair. That’s why it’s so shocking.”

Police on Monday morning were still at the home, which has a handicap-accessible ramp leading up the front door. The woman’s red van with a wheelchair lift was still in the parking lot along with the family’s grey SUV.

“They always waved hi and bye,” said Walker, adding that the family has lived there for about eight years.

Florip would not specify the type of wounds the man had nor how the woman and girl died.

“He was conscious and walked out of the house under his own power,” Florip said.

“This isn’t a whodunnit,” he said before charges were officially filed. “We’re not looking for an offender. We’re classifying this as a domestically related.”

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.
