New information from a witness to a 2012 gang-related killing on the South Side was credited Saturday with leading police to arrest a man they said was the getaway driver.
Dean Trevino, 21, of the 9500 block of South Avenue M, was charged with first-degree murder in the Nov. 3, 2012, death of 30-year-old Ismael Perez.
Prosecutors said Saturday that Trevino had been flashing gang signs to cars near 97th and Exchange, then went to a home in Whiting, Ind., and came back with an assault rifle.
Trevino pulled alongside Perez’s car, according to prosecutors, who said Perez and Trevino flashed opposing gang signs at each other. They said Trevino’s front-seat passenger then shot Perez once in the chest with the assault rifle.
Prosecutors said the police had been seeking the backseat passenger and recently found and spoke with him.
Trevino was ordered held Saturday on $1 million bail.
