A gun was fired during a carjacking attempt Thursday in River North on the Near North Side.

A 28-year-old man returned to his BMW M5 at 9:43 p.m. in the 700 block of North Hudson Avenue when a male got out of a nearby Dodge Challenger, pulled out a gun and demanded the keys, Chicago police said.

The suspect fired a round into the air when the man refused to turn over his keys, police said. The man then complied and ran.

The suspect was unable to drive the BMW, police said. He left it, got back into the Dodge and drove away. There may have been an accomplice with him in the Dodge, police said.

No injuries were reported and no one is in custody as Area Central detectives investigate.

Just over an hour later, two armed carjackers stole a Jeep after rear-ending it in the 300 block of West Ontario Street, also in River North.
