Man fatally shot in Lawndale

A man was killed in a shooting Thursday in Lawndale on the West Side, police said.

The 35-year-old was on the sidewalk about 6 p.m. in the 1600 block of South Homan Avenue when someone approached him and opened fire, Chicago police said.

The man was struck multiple times in the neck and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he later died, police said.

He was identified as Kevin Applewhite of Austin, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

An autopsy conducted Saturday confirmed Applewhite died of his gunshot wounds, the medical examiner’s office said. His death was ruled a homicide.

Area Four detectives are investigating.
