A man was fatally shot while trying to commit a robbery Thursday in Park Manor on the South Side, police said.

The man tried to rob a gas station with a shotgun about 9:50 p.m. in the 6700 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue when someone shot him in the back and face, Chicago police said. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified him as 55-year-old Tyrone Smith. He lived in Park Manor. Autopsy results ruled his death a homicide.

Police said the person who fired the fatal shots has not been located.

Area One detectives are investigating.
