Man shot and killed in Austin

Lavell Mathis, 25, was walking through a vacant lot about 1:10 a.m. in the 4900 block of West Madison Street when a man approached on foot and fired shots, authorities said.

A man was killed in a shooting early Sunday in Austin on the West Side.

The 25-year-old was walking through a vacant lot about 1:10 a.m. in the 4900 block of West Madison Street when a man approached on foot and fired shots, Chicago police said.

He suffered gunshot wounds to the abdomen and armpit and was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified him Lavell Mathis, a resident of Austin. An autopsy conducted Sunday ruled his death a homicide.

The shooter fled in a white sedan and is not in custody, according to police.

Area Four detectives are investigating.
