‘Helldrivers of Daytona’ lyricist Rob Meurer killed in hit & run

Broadwayworld.com is today reporting that Rob Meurer, the lyricist behind the recently shuttered new musical “Helldrivers of Daytona,” was struck by a hit-and-run driver on Sept. 23 in Studio City, Calif. He died from his injuries the following day. He was 65.

Mr. Meurer “toured internationally as his keyboard player and co-wrote many songs with Christopher Cross, who was with us on the ‘Helldrivers’ opening night to support his friend,” according to a statement from the show’s producer Richard Friedman.

Mr. Meurer is survived by his wife Beth and daughter Anne.

“Helldrivers of Daytona” a parody of 1960s beach and hot-rod movies, opened Sept. 12 at the Royal George Theatre, but closed Sept. 15 following disappointing critical reviews. The world-premiere musical was scheduled to run through Oct. 31.
