There are certain things public figures like Howie Mandel should instinctively know one never jokes about — especially on national TV — and bulimia is one of them.

On Tuesday’s broadcast of “America’s Got Talent” the show judge’s comment after “professional regurgitator” Stevie Starr performed, Mandel said, “You sir, make bulimia entertaining,” adding the crack would “probably come out wrong.”

It certainly did as the audience responded with deafening silence. The comment led to a firestorm on social media, causing Mandel to post a fast apology. The entertainer, responded while the show was still on the air, saying, ” I just wanna take a second just to apologize. I made a comment earlier, it’s live television, I wasn’t thinking. … I made light of bulimia which is a very serious eating disorder and mental health issue. I deal with mental health all the time, and did something stupid. I should never make light of it. I apologize to anybody who was offended. I’m not perfect. I make mistakes.” Mandel posted a similar message on Twitter.

As for Starr, he swallows random objects whole, and manages to bring them back up in one piece. On Tuesday’s show, he amazingly “ate” judge Heidi Klum’s ring, a lock and a key — then bringing them back up with the ring incredibly attached to the lock.
