Hudson calls off real engagement; Phoenix confesses he made up faux one

Hollywood sources have said for several weeks that Kate Hudson and fiance Matthew Bellamy (Muse) were no longer together — and now it’s been officially confirmed. “Kate and Matt have been separated for some time now,” the actress’ publicist told People. “Despite this they remain very close friends and committed co-parents.”

The couple’s son, Bingham “Bing” Hawn Bellamy, 3, was born in July 2011. Hudson is also the mother of son Ryder, 10, who was born during her marriage to another musician, Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes. Hudson and Robinson split up in 2006, after a nearly six-year marriage.

• One thing about Joaquin Phoenix: He sure seems to love yanking David Letterman’s chain. Remember when he did that bizarre interview on Dave’s “Late Show” in 2009, acting all weird and out of it? It was while he was filming his offbeat documentary “I’m Still Here.” Well, this time on Letterman’s show Monday night, Phoenix told the veteran late-night talkmeister that he was engaged to his yoga instructor.

On Tuesday, the actor ‘fessed up on “Good Morning America,” revealing he was not engaged to be married but was simply having some fun — at Letterman’s expense. “I think like my life’s so boring, and it seemed like something exciting to talk about, and I wanted the audience to like me,” Phoenix said on “GMA.” “They really like people getting married.”

Later Tuesday morning on “Live with Kelly and Michael,” Phoenix insisted Letterman “knew that I was joking around,” adding he doesn’t even do yoga.
