Jeffrey Tambor, who a Golden Globe this year for his portrayal of a transgendered woman on “Transparent” — created by Chicago native Jill Soloway — has come to the support of Bruce Jenner and his apparent journey to gender transitioning.

The actor told reporters at the Point Honors gala in New York on Monday that “Jenner has a right to do what Jenner wants to do, and the way Jenner wants to do it. I don’t think you should say, ‘Oh, you have to come out this way, or you have to come out this way.’ It’s not fair.”

Tambor also told the media at the New York event that Jenner’s high-profile will be a positive influence on transgender issues in general.

“I think it’s great! I think the more light and education there is about all of this is important. But I think people go, ‘Oh, I hope Jenner does it right.’ You know, Jenner can do it the way Jenner wants to do it. If he wants to do it making a documentary, then do it.”

Diane Sawyer’s exclusive interview with Jenner, set to air on ABC April 24, is expected to focus primarily on the Olympic champion’s gender transition.
