Square Roots Festival a vibrant music mix

When it comes to a wide array of music, the Square Roots Festival is hard to beat with its vibrant mix that runs the gamut from rock to world music. Plus there are jams, family activities, dance parties and food. Join in the fun at the three-day event on Lincoln, between Montrose and Wilson from 5-10 p.m. July 8, noon-11 p.m. July 9, noon-9 p.m. July 10. Admission is $10. Here’s a quick look at just some of the acts on this year’s roster.

Lydia Loveless (8:45 p.m. July 9) The Bloodshot Records artist never disappoints in concert and on her latest release, “Real,” a disc loaded with songs of heartache and loss.

Dessa (8:45 p.m. July 8) From Minneapolis’ Doomtree Collective, Dessa is a mesmerizing rapper, singer and essayist who bucks tradition.

Cracker (7:45 p.m. July 10) The recent album, “Berkeley to Bakersfield,” showcased the band’s ragged rock ‘n’ roll as well as its love of twangy California country.

Lera Lynn (7 p.m. July 10) The Texas born-Nashville based singer-songwriter moves beyond classic country into a pop-noir sound that transports the listener into a dark smoky bar on the edge of nowhere.

Dolly Varden (9 p.m. July 8) For two decades, Dolly Varden has been wowing and charming audiences with its blend of folk, country and R&B-gospel influences to create something solely its own.

Faris (5:30 p.m. July 9) Mississippi blues is reinterpreted in the Saharan desert blues style by this musician of Italian-Algerian Tuareg descent.

Los Hacheros (7:30 p.m. July 8) This Brooklyn-based band revives folkloric styles like son montuno, guaracha and salsa and often combines them with the fiery rhythms of bomba.
