A 17-year-old boy was shot early Friday in the University Village neighborhood on the Near West Side.

At 12:09 a.m., the boy was sitting in the back seat of a vehicle with other people in the 1200 block of South Union when they heard shots and drove away, according to Chicago Police.

The driver realized the boy was shot in the chest after he stopped the vehicle in the 1800 block of South Calumet.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said.
