A 20-year-old man died after his vehicle struck a railroad crossing signal early Sunday in south suburban Matteson.

Officers responded to Central Avenue and the CN Railroad tracks at 5:49 a.m. and found a single vehicle rollover crash, according to a statement from Matteson police.

The driver of the vehicle, 20-year-old Charles Vondrasek, was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:25 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Vondrasek lived in the 10000 block of Kennedy Avenue in Highland, Indiana.

The vehicle appears to have left the road, struck the railroad crossing signal and rolled over, police said. Vondrasek, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pinned in the vehicle and had to be extricated.

Police said speed and possible lane changes are the preliminary causes of the crash. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
