Authorities are trying to identify a driver who died in a fiery single-car crash Thursday morning in suburban North Chicago.

The driver lost control about 8:30 a.m. and crashed into a ditch on southbound Skokie Highway just south of Buckley Road along the Canadian National railway, North Chicago police said in a statement.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and found someone inside, according to North Chicago Fire Dept. Chief Dell Urban.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper said the driver remains unidentified, and the crash remains under investigation.
