Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced Monday that the state settled with the owner of a northwest suburban Barrington gas station that leaked gasoline for $20,000.

The Mobile gas station, owned by Shri Balaji Inc., leaked gasoline in January that contaminated soil and groundwater, according to a statement from the Attorney General’s Office. Shri Balaji will pay a civil penalty of $20,000.

Shri Balaji will also be required to evaluate the extent of the gasoline contamination and submit a proposed remediation plan t the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), according to the statement. The company will also be required to conduct regular samplings of soil and groundwater and report the results to the EPA.

The leak was discovered when residents complained of a gasoline-like odor, the office said.
