8 dead, 32 wounded in Chicago weekend shootings

Eight people were killed and at least 32 others were wounded in shootings across the city between Friday evening and Monday morning.

Most recently, a northwest suburban man was killed and a woman was injured early Monday in a South Loop shooting.

About 4 a.m., 27-year-old Sami Talab Salaymeh and a 23-year-old woman were in a vehicle in the 2400 block of South Michigan Avenue when two people walked up, one of whom pulled out a gun and opened fire, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Salaymeh was shot in the abdomen and arm; and the woman suffered a gunshot wound to the right leg, authorities said.

They drove themselves to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where Salaymeh was pronounced dead at 4:41 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 3800 block of Windjammer Lane in Hanover Park.

The woman was listed in good condition, police said.

Late Sunday, a 43-year-old man was discovered shot to death in his home in the West Chatham neighborhood on the South Side.

Officers performing a well-being check about 11:30 p.m. found Anreco D. Nichols unresponsive inside his home in the 8100 block of South Harvard, authorities said.

Nichols suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:41 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office. His death was ruled a homicide.

Sunday morning, a 21-year-old man was shot to death in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side.

Officers responding to a call of shots fired about 12:50 a.m. found Dontay Murray unresponsive inside a vehicle in an alley in the 7600 block of South Drexel, authorities said. Murray, of the 6600 block of South Michigan, was shot twice in the neck and was pronounced dead at the scene.

About 6 p.m. Saturday, a 20-year-old man was shot to death in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the South Side.

Kori O. Sellers was sitting in the passenger seat with another person at the wheel of a car parked in the 8600 block of South Ashland when someone walked up, reached into the window across the driver and fired multiple shots at Sellers, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

Sellers, of the 7900 block of South Sangamon, was shot in the chest and arm, authorities said. The driver took him to St. Bernard Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:52 p.m.

Another South Side slaying happened Saturday morning in Englewood.

William Palmer, 32, was sitting in a vehicle near his home in the 6300 block of South Honore about 5:20 a.m. when a gunman walked up and shot him in the head, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:58 a.m.

Two hours earlier, another man was killed in Washington Heights on the Far South Side.

Darnell Hardeman, 38, was outside in the 900 block of West 96th Street about 3:15 a.m. when two other people walked up and shot him several times, authorities said. Hardeman, of the 9600 block of South Halsted, was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:18 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

A half-hour before that, a 35-year-old man was found shot to death in the West Side Austin neighborhood.

Officers responding to a call of a person shot about 2:50 a.m. found the 35-year-old man unresponsive in the alley of the 200 block of North Laramie, police said. He had been shot once in the back of the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.

The weekend’s first fatal shooting happened about 6:45 p.m. Friday in Logan Square on the Northwest Side.

Daniel Alcantana, 20, was shot multiple times in the 2900 block of West Armitage and pronounced dead at the scene at 6:59 p.m., authorities said. He lived in the 900 block of North Harding.

The other man, 21, was shot in the leg and taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized, police said. He told investigators he heard shots and realized he’d been hit.

The latest nonfatal shooting happened about 1:40 a.m. Monday in the 6600 block of South Hoyne in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. A 25-year-old man was getting out of a vehicle when he heard gunfire and realized he’d been shot in the back, according to police.He was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital, police said.

At least 29 more people were wounded in gunfire across Chicago between 6:40 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday.
