Hubbard Street Dance Chicago has announced that Mikhail Baryshnikov, the dancer, choreographer, actor and found of the New York-based Baryshnikov Arts Center, will be the recipient of its 2014 Spotlight Award to be presented at the company’s annual benefit at the Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park on May 19, 2014.
Coincidentally, Baryshnikov will have just completed a series of performances of “Man in a Case,” a show based on two Chekhov stories, running May 15-18 at Chicago’ s Museum of Contemporary Art Theater, and he will be in attendance at the Hubbard Street gala.
“Mikhail Baryshnikov is an artist for whom I have the utmost respect and admiration,” said Glenn Edgerton, Hubbard Street’s artistic director. “His success in advocating for and popularizing dance as an art form, at the very highest level, goes back to the year our founder, Lou Conte, opened his first studio on Hubbard Street. The appreciation that Hubbard Street enjoys worldwide today is due in no small part to the groundwork laid by Misha over four decades in the U.S., across nearly every conceivable platform. I’m quite honored and moved to be able to thank him personally at our gala.”
In a prepared statement, Baryshnikov — a Tony- and Oscar-nominated performer who has been a Kennedy Center Honoree and a recipient of the National Medal of Honor — said: “I look at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s history and truly appreciate its goals and mission. The company has roots in classic forms and techniques, but is always evolving, always looking for something new in dance. Hubbard Street’s directors and administrators nurture the next generation of dance artists, and believe strongly in the importance of arts education.”
Baryshinkov was one of Northwestern University’s commencement speakers this past May.
