Prince welcomes U 2 Chicago -- for one show only?

Tickets go on sale this week for Prince’s first concert in Chicago in eight years.

Or will it be concerts?

The announcement of the Sept. 24 concert at United Center was couched in a degree of mystery. Previously, Prince has set up lengthy residencies in major cities — 21 nights each in London (2007) and Los Angeles (earlier this year), for instance — and while only the one date has been confirmed thus far in Chicago, the video ad for the on-sale lures fans by promising “a different experience every night,” while the press release from promoter Live Nation is conspicuously plural in mentioning “upcoming Chicago dates.”

A Live Nation spokesperson Tuesday said he had no information about additional concerts.

Prince’s schedule is wide open. The United Center, however, is fairly densely booked the rest of September and October.

Tickets for the single “Welcome 2 Chicago” show are available in a couple of pre-sales this week before being open to the general public at 10 a.m. Thursday via

Prince’s performance is in conjunction with an organization called Rebuild the Dream, co-founded by civil rights and environmental activist Van Jones. Rebuild the Dream is “a mobilization of hundreds of thousands of everyday people–from seniors to students, moms, dads, brothers and sisters–who come together to build strong vibrant communities and to fix our economy from the ground up.”
