Aurora man convicted of attempted murder in 2013 shooting

An Aurora man was convicted Thursday of shooting at two people in a car three years ago in the west suburb.

Armando Delgado, 20, faces at least 26 years in prison on an attempted murder charge for the Sept. 13, 2013 shooting, according to the Kane County state’s attorney’s office. He waived his right to a jury trial.

About 9:15 p.m., Delgado and then 24-year-old Andrew Bueno were in Bluff Street Park when a car drove west past them on Bluff Street and stopped at a stop sign at South Broadway, prosecutors said.

While the car waited, Delgado and Bueno ran toward it shouting gang slogans and flashing gang signs, prosecutors said. Delgado walked up to the passenger side and held a 9mm handgun to the passenger’s head.

The driver managed to speed off before Delgado could fire a shot into the vehicle. Delgado continued shooting at the vehicle, shattering the passenger window, prosecutors said. Investigators found bullet fragments in the truck and near the dashboard, but no one was injured.

A few hours later, Delgado was a passenger in a car that was stopped for a traffic violation. Officers, acing on a description of the shooter by the victims, took Delgado into custody and found a spent shell casing in his pocket that matched the ones found at Bluff Street, prosecutors said.

Delgado, of the 1000 block of Tollview Avenue in Aurora, faces 26-50 years in prison, which includes a mandatory 20-year enhancement because he personally fired the gun in the crime, prosecutors said. He is next scheduled to appear in court Aug. 30.
