Bicyclist airlifted from crash with SUV in Plainfield

A 14-year-old girl riding a bicycle was airlifted to the hospital Thursday afternoon after a crash with an SUV in southwest suburban Plainfield.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m., a Honda CRV traveling north on South 248th Street near West 119th Street crashed into a bicyclist traveling west in the south crosswalk across 248th, according to a statement from Plainfield police. A 28-year-old woman was driving the Honda, with a 2-year-old passenger.

When officers arrived at the scene, the bicycle was off the roadway north of the intersection and the girl “was conscious and breathing, but showed signs of significant injuries,” police said. She was taken via Life Star helicopter to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

The intersection was closed until about 5:30 p.m., police said. The crash remains under investigation by the Plainfield Police Department Accident Reconstruction Unit.
