Bond denied for 3 charged with robbery after man shot by police on South Side

Bond was denied Sunday for three men — including one who was shot by a Chicago Police officer — accused in a pair of armed robberies early Friday on the South Side.

About 2 a.m., Terrence Hogans and Kamari Belmont, both 21, and 19-year-old Khalil Powell walked up to a man and woman leaving a restaurant in the 3700 block of South Vincennes, Cook County prosecutors said at a Sunday bond hearing.

Belmont allegedly took the woman’s cell phone and wallet while Hogans pointed a gun at the man. When the man tried to swat the gun away, Hogans shot him four times in the groin and then again in the thigh when he tried to stop a passing car for help, prosecutors said.

The trio ran away and the victim was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he remained hospitalized Sunday, prosecutors said.

An hour later, a car driven by Powell with the two other accused men in it approached a couple getting into their vehicle in the 0-100 block of East 21st Street, prosecutors said. They allegedly took a cell phone and wallet.

The woman flagged down Chicago Police officers and helped them track down the car to the 500 block of 43rd Street by tracing the cell phone with a mobile application, authorities said.

As officers approached, Hogans got out of the vehicle with a handgun in his waistband and lunged at one of the officers with a forearm to the chest, authorities said. An officer shot him once in the arm and chest and he ran away, prosecutors said. The other two men were arrested.

Hogans showed up at Mercy Hospital, where he was identified and arrested, authorities said. He was transferred to Stroger, where he remained hospitalized Sunday.

Police recovered a semiautomatic handgun and found the victims’ items in the alleged robbers’ car, prosecutors said.

Hogans, of the 4200 block of South Ellis, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, two counts of armed robbery, aggravated battery of a peace officer, unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated battery with a firearm, authorities said. Powell, of the 5100 block of South Loomis, and Kamari Belmont, of the 7100 block of South Champlain, each face two counts of armed robbery.

Judge Adam Bourgeois denied bail for the three at a hearing on Sunday. They’re scheduled to appear in court again May 8.
