Former student pleads guilty to videotaping women in shower

A former student at a west suburban Christian college pleaded guilty Friday morning to videotaping female students taking showers at their campus apartment for nearly five months.

Alexander Lim, 25, pleaded guilty to five counts of unauthorized video recording, a Class 3 felony, according to the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office. Judge John Kinsella accepted Lim’s plea.

A female student at Wheaton College was taking a shower in her university-owned apartment on Feb. 22, 2015, when she “noticed what appeared to be a watch facing directly towards her,” a statement from prosecutors said. “She also noticed that the watch had a video lens on its face . . . ”

The woman called campus police, who called Wheaton police, who discovered the device was a “spyview camera watch.”

Prosecutors said Lim put the camera in the apartment washroom, and “had been secretly video recording several women as they showered since October 2014.” He also posted the videos online.

Lim was arrested Feb. 23, 2015, and posted 10 percent of his $75,000 bond to be released from custody Feb 27, 2015, prosecutors said. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 30 for sentencing.

Lim has not been a student at Wheaton College since the spring semester of 2015, a school spokesman said.

“This morning, Alexander Lim admitted that on multiple occasions he violated the privacy of several young women while they showered in their own home,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in the statement. “Such an invasion of privacy is not a harmless college prank, as Mr. Lim is now well aware.”

Each count of unauthorized video recording is punishable by up to five years in prison, according to the state’s attorney’s office.
