Driver charged with DUI after hitting two girls on NW Side

A west suburban man has been charged with DUI after he struck two girls with his vehicle, then took off Tuesday morning in the Dunning neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

Matthew Lucchini, 26, was charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of leaving the scene of an accident, all misdemeanors, according to Chicago Police.

The girls, ages 7 and 14, were walking in the crosswalk in the 3400 block of North Austin when they were struck by a vehicle that failed to yield about 8 a.m., police said. The Chicago Academy High School and Chicago Academy Elementary School are both on the block where the crash happened.

Both girls were taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, police said. The younger girl received stitches in her chin, and her condition was stabilized. The older girl suffered minor ankle injuries.

The driver did not stop, but was taken into custody a short distance away.

Lucchini, of the 2300 block of North Remington Drive in Naperville, is scheduled to appear in traffic court March 2, police said.
