A Chicago Police captain was shot Tuesday evening in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, and an ensuing barricade situation is impacting passengers on Metra’s SouthWest Service.

SouthWest Service trains run on tracks immediately east of the building where police are responding, maps show. All outbound trains are suspended between Union Station and the Wrightwood station at 79th and Columbus until further notice because of the police activity, Metra said.

Outbound train No. 831, scheduled to arrive at 179th Street at 7:21 p.m., was halted after the incident began and sent back to Union Station to let passengers find alternative transportation. Metra is sending an extra train to Wrightwood Tuesday night to make outbound stops between there and 179th Street.

On the inbound side, train No. 838 was scheduled to make stops from 179th Street to Wrightwood, then turn around and head outbound again, Gillis said. Inbound train No. 840 has been canceled.

Buses on the No. 8A South Halsted line are also being rerouted around the area, the CTA said.

The police response continues at the building Tuesday evening. The police captain has been taken to Stroger Hospital where he was listed in critical condition, though a police source said the injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
