A convicted felon was arrested early Saturday for possessing a handgun in northwest suburban Elgin.

Giovonni Rhodes, 24, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, a Class 3 felony, according to a statement from Elgin police.

About 3 a.m., Elgin police officers on patrol conducted a traffic stop in the 600 block of Oakland Avenue and brought in a K9 officer for the subsequent investigation, police said.

A handgun was found inside the vehicle, in the area of Rhodes’ seat, police said.

Rhodes, of Hanover Park, was ordered held at the Kane County Adult Justice Center on a $100,000 bond, authorities said.
