Two nearly identical vehicles were struck by bullets on Interstate 57 Wednesday afternoon in the south suburbs.

Shortly before 4 p.m., southbound lanes were shut down between 127th and 147th streets while troopers investigated a report of shots fired, Illinois State Police said.

Investigators learned that a male driving near 102nd Street and Indiana Avenue saw a silver Chevrolet Impala following him and got on I-57 at Halsted Street to lose the car. While on the expressway near 127th, someone in the Impala shot at him.

He got off the expressway at 147th Street, and someone in the Impala then fired at a nearly identical vehicle driven by a female about a half-mile north of 147th Street, police said.

Neither driver was injured, but both vehicles were struck. Police believe the second incident was a case of mistaken identity.

Traffic was diverted at 127th Street while investigators looked for shell casings, police said. All lanes were reopened just before 6 p.m.

Anyone with information should call state police at (847) 294-4400.
