Police: 6-year-old boy killed in I-88 crash in North Aurora

A 6-year-old Iowa boy was killed in a two-vehicle crash Monday evening in the westbound lanes of the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) in west suburban North Aurora.

A silver 2007 Dodge Durango and bronze 2009 Nissan Murano were traveling west on I-88 near Randall Road about 6:55 p.m. when they collided and both vehicles rolled over, according to Illinois State Police. The cause and circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.

At least three people were injured in the crash, including a 32-year-old woman from Des Moines, Iowa who was driving the Durango and two boys who were passengers in the SUV, police said.

The 6-year-old boy, identified as Jouseppe Castillo, was airlifted to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead at 9:44 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 2400 block of East Washington in Des Moines, Iowa.

The woman and the other boy, whose exact age was not known, were both taken to Provena Mercy Medical Center in Aurora and then transferred to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

It was not known whether the driver of the Murano, a 30-year-old woman from Oak Park, was injured, police said.

All westbound lanes of the tollway were closed to traffic for more than four hours after the crash while authorities investigated, police said.
