A 23-year-old man was charged with child endangerment after a 5-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the hand Saturday afternoon in the Washington Park neighborhood on the South Side.

Myles Mitchell, of the 2000 block of South Michigan Avenue, was charged with misdemeanor counts of child endangerment and unlawful use of a weapon, police said Sunday night.

The shooting occurred in the 5900 block of South Calumet Avenue at 4:25 p.m. The boy was taken to University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital in good condition with a self-inflicted wound, police said.

Myles told investigators that he kept a gun in the 5900 block of South Calumet home in an area where it could be reached by a child, police said.
