No bail for man charged with shooting retired CPD deputy chief

A South Side man was held without bail after he was charged with shooting a retired Chicago Police Department deputy chief in a robbery attempt Wednesday in South Chicago.

Keith Vaughns, 21, of the 7800 block of South Oglesby St., was charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted armed robbery with a firearm, aggravated battery with a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon in the shooting of Fred Coffey.

He was ordered held without bail Friday, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office. He is scheduled to appear in court next on Sept. 21.

The police said Coffey was sitting in a chair in the 2400 block of East 82nd Street just after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday when Vaughns walked up and ordered him to “give me everything you got.”

They said Vaughns shot Coffey once in the left shoulder, but the 72-year-old retired cop fired back, striking Vaughns in his left thigh.

Coffey was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.

Vaughns drove off but was later caught and taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, the police said.

He’d been convicted of unlawful use of a weapon in 2015 and sentenced to a year in prison, though he was paroled after less than three months, prison records show.

On Wednesday, police Supt. Eddie Johnson said, “Retired deputy chief Coffey was a great police officer and public servant to the people of Chicago, and I am glad he is OK.”
