Autopsy: Kane County jail detainee died of heart issue

A man who died in custody early Tuesday at the Kane County Adult Correctional Center in west suburban St. Charles suffered from a heart issue, authorities said.

An autopsy performed Wednesday ruled 48-year-old Alan Span’s preliminary cause of death as “cardiac related,” according to the Kane County coroner’s office. A final ruling was pending the result of toxicology tests.

Span’s cellmates called for help when he appeared to have a “medical emergency,” and the Elgin resident was pronounced dead at the jail at 2:15 a.m., according to the Kane County sheriff’s office. No foul play was suspected.

He had been held since July 13, 2016 on home invasion and drug charges, sheriff’s police said.

Illinois State Police are investigating.
