A man charged with robbing a bank Monday afternoon in west suburban Warrenville is also suspected of at least two other suburban bank robberies, according to the FBI.

Joseph David, 40, of Glendale Heights was charged with one felony count of bank robbery, according to a complaint filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court.

David walked into the West Suburban Bank branch at 3S041 Rt. 53 in Warrenville at 1:26 p.m. wearing a fake beard and wig and held up a piece of paper that said, “Don’t scream, I have a gun,” according to the complaint.

He slid the piece of paper towards the teller and said, “Don’t scream, I have a gun,” according to the complaint.

The employee said that she did not have anything, and did not give the robber any money, according to the complaint.

He walked to the next teller station and asked the teller to open his drawer. The teller said he did not have anything, and the robber said, “I know you have money,” according to the complaint. The teller opened his drawer to show the robber there was no cash.

The suspect then turned and walked out the door. As he left, two other bank employees watched him get into the driver’s seat of an SUV and wrote down the license plate, according to the complaint.

A few minutes after the robbery, authorities read a description of the suspect and the SUV over police radios, according to the complaint.

Police spotted the suspect driving near Route 56 and Batavia Road in Warrenville about five minutes later and pulled over the SUV, according to the complaint.

The rear license plate no longer matched the one in the robbery, but it appeared that another plate might have been affixed over the top of the original license plate, according to the complaint. The driver was wearing hospital scrubs and did not have a beard.

When officers asked the driver what he was doing in the area, the man said he was looking for a job, according to the complaint.

The officers brought David to the bank and two employees identified him as the robber, according to the complaint.

The FBI contacted David’s fiancé and the mother of his child, who owned the SUV he was driving. She gave authorities permission to search the vehicle, and police found the note used in the robbery, as well as a fake beard and a wig.

According to the FBI, the same man is suspected of robbing a Bank of America branch at 506 S. Schmale Road in Carol Stream at 11:23 a.m. Aug. 23; and a TCF Bank branch inside a Jewel-Osco at 2164 Bloomingdale Road in Glendale Heights at 4:51 p.m. July 29.

David has not been charged in those robberies.
