A man was shot and seriously wounded by someone who tried to rob him Monday evening in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

About 7 p.m., the 38-year-old was walking in the 700 block of North Lavergne when someone with a gun walked up and demanded cash, according to Chicago Police.

He refused to hand anything over, and the robber shot him in the buttocks and thigh before running away empty-handed, police said.

The man was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital. No one was in custody Monday night.
