Man dies after jumping onto I-57 to escape Chicago Police

A 26-year-old man died nearly a week after he was run over by a truck after jumping onto Interstate 57 while trying to elude police on the Far South Side.

The man was running from a Chicago Police officer after a retail theft incident about 8:30 a.m. Aug. 25 when he jumped from the 119th Street overpass onto I-57, according to Illinois State Police.

He tried to stop a semi truck in the right lane, then jumped onto the truck’s tractor, fell and got caught under the truck’s rear axle, police said.

The man, later identified as Parris Johnson, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 8:04 a.m. Wednesday, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 12100 block of South Bishop.

An autopsy Thursday showed he died of complications from multiple blunt force injuries from entanglement in the wheel of a semi and his death was ruled an accident.
