A man died Tuesday morning after he was shot the night before in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side, authorities said.

Jamarh Carter, 22, was sitting in a vehicle with another person at 8:55 p.m. Monday in the 8000 block of South May when a gunman got into the back seat and shot him in the back of the head, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The shooter then tried to drive away in the vehicle, but the other person pulled him out and drove Carter to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, police said. The witness was being uncooperative with investigators.

Carter, who lived in the 13000 block of South King Drive, was transferred to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:17 a.m. Tuesday, according to the medical examiner’s office.

A police source said Carter was a documented gang member and the shooting appeared to be gang-related.

Area South detectives are conducting a homicide investigation.
