A man was shot and critically wounded early Sunday in the South Shore neighborhood.

The 23-year-old was walking about 12:10 a.m. in the 7000 block of South Merrill when gunfire erupted and he was shot in the face, according to Chicago Police.

He was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said.
