A person was taken into custody after a south suburban man was shot to death early Tuesday in northwest Indiana.

Officers responded to a shooting in the 5500 block of Claude Avenue in Hammond at 11:22 p.m. and found a 25-year-old man with a gunshot wound, according to a statement from Hammond Police Lt. Richard Hoyda.

The man, identified as Craig Hatton Jr. of Riverdale, was taken to Franciscan St. Margaret Health in Hammond, where he was pronounced dead at 1:13 a.m., according to the Lake County coroner’s office.

Hoyda said it appears that Hatton got into an argument inside a home on that block with a 26-year-old Hammond man, which moved outside the home and led to the shooting.

The suspect was taken into custody about 2 a.m., Hoyda said. Charges were pending as of Tuesday morning.

Anyone with information should call Sgt. Adam Clark at (219) 852-2987, or Lt. Mark Tharp at (219) 852-2988.
