No charges for man shot by off-duty Chicago Police sergeant

A man who was shot by an off-duty Chicago Police sergeant Sunday morning in the Morgan Park neighborhood on the Far South Side will not face criminal charges.

At 5:06 a.m., the officer shot the 18-year-old in his arm during an “armed confrontation” in the 10900 block of South Hermosa, according to Chicago Police.

The man was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized, police said. He has since been treated and released from the hospital.

Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said the officer first spotted the man “acting suspiciously” in the 10000 block of South Wood. When the officer began to question the man, the man became elusive.

Johnson acknowledged he did not have all the information, and simply told reporters the incident “escalated in some way,” prompting the officer to shoot.

“We still have many unanswered questions,” Johnson said.

Police said Tuesday morning that the man is not in custody. No charges will be filed.
